I suppose I'm becoming somewhat converted to the idea of setting goals :)
I often cringed at the idea of 'setting a date' to find someone to be taught in my home. But, my perspective has changed. For me, this was a way for me to show the Lord that I was now serious about wanting to learn how to become a life-long finder for the missionaries. Now rather than thinking of this exercise as 'setting a date' I like think of it as 'teaching in the home.'
The first date I set came and went. I didn't find someone, but I had immensely wonderful, personal experiences.
The lesson for me was to continue to show the Lord that I really wanted to learn how to become a finder. Shortly after, a friend I had made listened to a couple of lessons taught by the missionaries.
I set a new date for the end of November. Of course, I didn't want to put off my efforts. The Lord blessed me with a very sweet experience of finding a wonderful woman whom we taught.
(Quite a few people are now saying that 'yes, they'd be interested in learning from the missionaries.' But, I'm learning how to turn that expressed interest into an actual appointment. Now a days, I just immediately set the appointment without even really knowing the missionaries schedule).
My experience is that committing to the Lord that I'll make all my best to find someone by a date I'll strive for allows me to show the Lord my desire and to plead for His help in something that is very difficult for me. Seriously, having these experiences is way beyond me, and I just have to rely upon the Lord to teach and help me have the experiences.
